Luxury homes are selling in higher numbers, and at higher price points, than ever before in a number of markets across Canada, according to a new survey of the high-end real estate market.

Of the 16 major Canadian markets surveyed by RE/MAX in its Upper-End Report, 13 posted an increase in high-end sales, with 10 of those markets setting records.

Michael Polzler, executive vice-president of RE/MAX for Ontario-Atlantic Canada, said the luxury home sales spike is due to a couple of factors.

“The fact is there are a lot of people who see Canada as a safe haven. So we have our traditional successful business people but also a lot of people coming in from the outside who are already successful and have money to spend, Polzler told CTV’s Canada AM. “And that of course creates competition and demand.”

Among the wealthiest shoppers in the real estate market, economic turmoil in Europe and around the world seems to have had little effect, Polzler said. Luxury home prices continue to climb, starting at around $500,000 in St. John’s and Halifax, up to about $2 million in Vancouver, and there are people lined up to make an offer.

“Their confidence abounds from coast to coast, irrespective of price point,” Polzler said in the report, released Wednesday.

Of the 16 markets that were surveyed, Regina saw the greatest year-over-year increase, with upper-end residential sales up 56 per cent from the first quarter of 2011.

Quebec City marked a 50 per cent increase, with the Greater Toronto Area just behind at 49 per cent. However, when the numbers were broken down within the GTA, Mississauga recorded an incredible 275 per cent increase, with 30 high-end homes sold, compared to eight in the same period a year earlier.

The London-St. Thomas area in Ontario marked a 43 per cent increase, while Saskatoon was up 21 per cent

In Greater Vancouver, the number of luxury home sales actually dropped by 31 per cent, from 573 sales in Q1 of 2011, to 393 in 2012.

While the numbers overall are up more than RE/MAX had predicted, Polzler said he’s not entirely surprised because dollars — or in this case millions of dollars — stretch farther in Canada.

“This sounds funny but it’s true — we’re a great value. If you compare our high-end prices to somewhere like London, England or Paris, around Europe or Hong Kong, we’re a bargain,” Polzler said.

Thank you!! We would like to send out a sincere thank you to all of the supporters and donators who helped make our 2012 CMN IWK Auction a Great Success! We raised $13,800 in support of the IWK Foundation through the Children’s Miracle Network. These funds go directly to fund services, care & research provided to Children with illness. The video above does a great job portraying what these Children are faced with.

We look forward to having another successful event next year & once again thank you to all those who donated, attended, volunteered, & purchased items.

Well it’s that time of year… when we have to put our “pink” For Sale signs in storage until next year. It was a fun month & we raised a lot of awareness for this great cause. We also received lots of compliments from our clients on their new pink lawn ornaments! Because this was our first year we definitely learned a few things about organization; replacing 400 + signs in a weekend is not an easy task :) Over the upcoming weeks as October sales “firm-up” we’ll have a final tally for the amount we’ve raised for CBCF. We’d like to thank all of our REALTORS® for their help and our clients for letting us swap their signs. We look forward to doing it all over again next October!

It’s official. REMAX nova has turned PINK! We, at REMAX nova, have always been strong supporters of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s (CBCF) quest to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, mainly through our “Sold On a Cure” Program. This October, we’ve decided to take things to a whole new level. In an unprecedented company effort, we are going “PINK” for the month of October.

So, what do we mean by “PINK”?

Well almost all of our marketing efforts for the next 30 days will be, you guessed it…PINK. This includes all 400 or so FOR SALE signs being replaced with specially designed PINK signs. In addition all newspaper ads, Real Estate Book, Website, TV ads and of course kicking the month off with 22 members of our team participating in the CIBC Run For The Cure. REMAX nova was proud to once again participate in the annual Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament at the Sherwood Golf course in Chester Wednesday. We were proud to have 3 teams this year & all enjoyed a great day of golf with good weather. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Atlantic Chapter of Make-A-Wish, founded by our own Jill Sutherland (& husband Bruce). On Wednesday generous participants raised over $30,000 from the auction festivities alone, granting at least two wishes for children the organization is currently working with. Congratulations to all the sponsors involved and congratulations to Jill & Bruce for 10 years of making a difference in local children’s lives.

How to Choose The Right Halifax Real Estate Agent when Selling Your Home
Part I

It’s something that everyone fears in real estate…choosing the wrong agent. But, how can you make sure that this never happens to you? Or even better, how do you make sure that this never happens to you again? Our answer comes in three parts.

Part 1: Your first step in choosing a real estate agent should be for you to make a list of what you’re not looking for in a real estate agent. If you’re not quite sure how to start that list then no worries, we’ve got your back on this one. Studies have shown that the top three complaints about real estate agents are; 1) Lack or communication, 2) Agent did not have clients’ best interest at heart (ie too busy), and 3) Agent didn’t do enough to sell the house.

These three complaints should be at the top of your “what I do not want from my agent experience” list. You should also make it a point to avoid agents who…

a) Lack professionalism
b) Don’t have any knowledge of your local area.
c) Only work real estate part-time.
d) Can’t present or market himself/herself well
e) Are not confident in their ability (and not too arrogant either)

As mentioned, today we hosted the Fultz House Museum weekly lunch. The turnout was great! We had over 130 guests drop by for a bite to eat at this local historic site. I had no idea of the history that this piece of Sackville Real Estate has. Back in the day (1800s) the main stagecoach roads that connected the province ran right by the property. More specifically the route to Truro and Windsor divided right where the property is located today. Back then the Fultz family offered many services for customers passing through on their way to further destinations. Today the museum has many artifacts and reminders of our local history for all to see. The property and museum are privately run & funded and therefore have regular fundraising efforts like the lunch we participated in today. Thanks to all you came & thanks to all of our people who helped out! Hopefully our egg salad sandwiches were a hit :)
